SEND & Supporting Individual Needs

Goole Academy is a supportive and inclusive 11 – 16 school. We support and value the abilities of all our students regardless of their individual needs. It is our duty to provide equal opportunities for every person in our care and to offer a safe and fully equipped learning environment which caters to the needs of every student as an individual. We are committed to inclusion within the school curriculum and participation in all aspects of school life.

At Goole Academy, students with Special Educational Needs are fully included within our academy. Furthermore, we ensure that any student who requires additional support, for whatever reason, will be recorded according to the Code of Practice at School Action (K), or Statement (E) level so that every student in the academy is fully supported to achieve their potential.

A setting that understands that their students are most successful when they feel happy, valued, challenged and supported to achieve their very best.

The SENCO and the SEND team are responsible for providing support to other staff in the academy for students’ needs to be met. The nature of this support is specifically tailored and determined by the needs of the individual student or teaching group.

Staff support each other to develop their skills through a strong CPD programme tailored to need. They are motivated to improve and to improve the lives of everyone so that they achieve their potential and goals.

The information required is set out in the Special Educational Needs and Disability Regulations 2014. The SEN Information Report must include the following information and be cross referenced to the School’s SEN Policy, Accessibility Plan and how the school meets its duties under the Equality Act 2010 (and updates issued in 2012).

KS4 Access Arrangements.

Pupils in KS4 may receive access arrangements in order to support examinations. All access arrangements are on an individual basis and are as a result of testing to establish need. We endeavour to identify in KS3 if pupils may need additional arrangements to support examinations, however they will not be officially tested until year 10 via our external provider. More information on Exam Access Arrangements can be found

Goole Academy adopts a ‘whole school approach’ to Special Educational Needs and Disabilities. All staff strive to promote inclusion of all students. The School is committed to ensuring that pupils with special educational needs and disabilities can fulfil not only their academic potential and achieve optimal educational outcomes, but also achieve physically, creatively, emotionally and socially.

      • Our Designated Safeguarding Lead provides pupils with access to a range of external agency support. School nurses visit every week and run drop in clinics. We also work with ERYC as part of an early intervention project to avoid young people disengaging with education and falling into criminal activity. As a school we utilise several agencies to assist our young people including, YFS, Childrens Social Care, PET, MIND, CAMHs, DVAP, Youth Action, ISPHN (Nursing Team), Humberside Police, CYPSS, local Children’s Centres amongst many others as needs dictate. We also complete regular welfare checks on our students and provide free breakfasts for all students, as we strive for a complete wrap-around care for all.
      • Our designated SENDCo is Mrs Sarah Smith – email – Send@gooleacademy.org.uk

Parents and carers may also wish to access East Riding of Yorkshire Council support such as Parent Partnership, Aiming High and Short Breaks provision and the Children’s Disability Team. The East Riding of Yorkshire Local Offer can be found by clicking here.
