Portal Players: Y8 Student Publishes Debut Novel
Y8 student Henry F for Rossington All Saints Academy is now a published author after co writing a novel with his mum.
The book began as Henry’s idea- an imaginative story about a group of 10 teenage gamers who discover a mysterious portal and must complete a series of game-like challenges to find their way home.
How did the idea come about?
I had the idea after my mum published her first book. I started reading it and thought of a really cool idea for my own story and characters, so I asked if we could write a book together. My mum helped me turn my ideas into a real book.
How long did it take to complete the book?
It took about six weeks to finish the book. Because it’s quite a short book and I already had most of the story planned out, it didn’t take too long. My mum mainly helped by adding more detail and putting everything together.

What have people’s reactions been like so far? Have any of your friends read the book?
We haven’t told loads of people about the book yet, but the people who have read it really liked it. Some of my friends enjoyed it, and my Grandma, Grandad and Godparents are really proud of me.
Two of my friends, Elliot and Jordy, have read the book. They are characters in it as well, and they both said it was really good.
How do you feel now that people can buy and read your book?
I feel really proud and happy that people can now buy and read my book. It’s exciting knowing people can enjoy something I helped create.
In your words, what is the book about? (Do you have a favourite part)
The book is about some children who find a portal into a secret gaming world. They have to complete different levels and collect mysterious artefacts so they can defeat the big boss and get back to the real world. My favourite part is all the adventures and challenges in the gaming world. It reminds me of playing Super Mario Bros on the Switch.
Together with his mum they developed his idea into a short novel, working on characters, puzzles, and the overall adventure. The book is now available in both paperback and kindle formats on amazon
Knowing that I inspired Henry to create something so amazing means so much to me. I’m really proud of how determined and creative he is when he has an idea. I love how he sees the world differently to other children because it makes him unique.
Henry planned the story so well that I mainly just helped add detail and bring everything together. It took time, but it was really fun working on the book together.
It brought us closer and it was amazing seeing the finished book printed.
I really hope Henry comes up with more ideas for us to work on together in the future.
Congratulations to Henry, we are extremely proud of his achievement!!
